ON THE TOWN: Philharmonic gives gallant overture to 16th season

By: JOYCE RUDOLPH

An exuberant soloist and a masterful orchestra delighted guests during the opening concert of the Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra's 16th season.

The Hall of Liberty, tucked inside Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, was filled nearly to capacity for the free concert, held Nov. 18.

"We came early and they've played every instrument," Judi Bell said. "They are just loving it.

Some of the philharmonic officials attending were Lynda Willner of Glendale, president of the board of directors; Connie Cummins of Eagle Rock, a board member; Elsbeth Riess of Manhattan Beach, vice president and Judy Gragg, board member.

Several others attending were Dan and Virginia Saliba of Burbank, who are regulars at the Starlight Bowl during the summer season, and Robert and Rita Burns of Glendale attending with Mary Margaret Smith of Glendale. Smith has underwritten the orchestra's tuba chair. Smith's donation will be given special acknowledgment in the program throughout the orchestra's season.

At least three standing ovations were given to the evening's guest soloist, violinist Lindsay Deutsch, who played Tchaikovsky's "Concerto in D for Violin and Orchestra. She literally danced with the violin in a difficult program that she made look effortless.

TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ALEX’S RESIDENT MUSICIANS

Since 1925, the Alex has welcomed many of Los Angeles’ premiere orchestras and musical ensembles to its stage. The talented musicians who lead the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and Glendale Youth Orchestra give us a closer look at their upcoming seasons.

JEFFREY KAHANE
MUSICAL DIRECTOR, LOS ANGELES CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
“The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) is in my opinion – and the opinion of many people who have heard orchestras all over the world – one of the finest ensembles of its kind,” says Jeffrey Kahane, LACO’s music director. “I grew up in Los Angeles and had the privilege of hearing the orchestra when I was a young teenager. And I never would have imagined that I would end up being LACO’s music director. It’s a great thrill to be music director at this time in the orchestra’s history when things are doing so well and our audiences are growing and thriving.”

The 2006-07 season marks LACO’s 11th year at the Alex Theatre. “We’re thrilled to be performing at the Alex and for our growing family of listeners,” notes Kahane. “It’s a beautiful, historic building and we love the atmosphere. The Alex offers a great ambience for us.”

The upcoming season also marks Kahane’s 10th conducting the 40-member LACO. In addition to that role, he continues his successful tenure as music director of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the Green Music Festival in Sonoma County, having recently completed his tenth and final season as music director of the Santa Rosa Symphony.

Each season, what makes LACO performances so special are the talented guest performers – hand-picked by Kahane. “Often I will talk to colleagues around the world and am always looking out for the most exciting young talent,” he says. “I will sometimes ask for recordings, or go to hear a performer in person. For this season, Lindsay Deutsch is a young Los Angeles violinist who was studying at the Colburn School of Music. She asked if she could audition for me and I was blown away by her playing. I immediately called up the LACO office to say this is someone we have to engage as a soloist. Edward Garner is a young conductor who has been having spectacular success all over the world. Sometimes I go by intuition in choosing a guest performer; sometimes I go on the advice of people I’ve known and trust. Usually, I just use my own ears.”

For Kahane and the Orchestra, the coming months are set to usher in a golden time. “The reputation of the Orchestra is growing and growing –we’re now making plans for the first European tour in a long time. And this energy is reflected in our performances. We’re all very excited about this coming season.”
